Frequently Asked Questions
General Issues
Q: Hi
Baseline.. ..
A : It is
not baseline. Bassline is correct and was named because I like music in which
BASS LINE plays a significant role.
Q: Why are the other users invisible in my user
list? / Why messages are not delivered well?
A : Please
check the following items.
- Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP SP2:
If you can see others but others can see you, please try 'Network Setup Wizard' at advanced with generous settings.
I couldn't figure out the exact reason, but this works fine in some cases.
- Windows Firewall in Windows XP SP2:
Bassline Winpopup uses two protocols,
TCP/IP and NetBT. TCP/IP port (default: 52812 or View>Network Settings>TCP/IP)
don't have to be cared if Bassline WinPopup is selected in 'Exception tab'.
Please check 'Printer and File sharing'
to enable NetBT(NetBIOS over TCP/IP: RFC1002;
UDP port 137,138 and TCP port 139 are used in this protocol)
To enable in command line, type 'netsh firewall set service FILEANDPRINT'.
- NetBIOS over TCP/IP:
Unless other machines are displayed, please check
'Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP' instead of 'Default option' in advanced TCP/IP.
NetBIOS setting is significant even if you don't have WINS.
- [WinNT/2k/XP] Network interface card should be
connected and enabled. Without this, even you will not be displayed.
- Only machines running Bassline WinPopUp are
shown. Without Bassline WinPopUp, it is natural not to be displayed.
- File sharing: Bassline WinPopUp is similar to
'folder sharing'. Please check if 'My Network Places' and 'Entire Network'
is working.
- Workgroup: The machines displayed when openning
'Send Message Dialog' belong to the same workgroup. Unless workgroup names
are organized, it is recommended to change it. Machines which don't belong
to your workgroup should be browsed through "MS Network". If you're
communicating with people in different workgroup, it is recommended to add
them into "Frequent List in browser"
[WinXP only] Browsing 'MS Network'
has been fixed from version 3.42
- Private firewall software: Please test without
firewall software (e.g. Zone alarm, Kerio Personal Firewall). Communcation
can be blocked by this kind of software.
- Network protocols installed: Non-homogeneous
network protocols might cause communication problem. But unfortunately we
can't recommend specific set of settings. It should be decided depending on
your environment and usage. Usually, only TCP/IP is recommended for the
network traffic. But unless it works, please test with installation of
NetBEUI(or NetBIOS) and IPX/SPX, additionally File and Printer Sharing for
Microsoft Networks
- Subnet
mask: Within one subnet, subnet mask value should be
identical to those of other machines. Distinct subnet mask value could be a
cause. For example, they won't work with the values 255.255.255.128 for one
machine and 255.255.255.0 for another.
Subnet mask is configurable in
"Windows 2000: My Network Places>Property>Local Area
Connection>Property>Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)>Subnet mask". Or
please send me the files generated from the command line 'ipconfig /all >
report.txt' in both machines.
- Loopback test: Before emailing to me, please
check if you can send a message to yourself.
- Routability: Without WINS, Bassline WinPopUp is
not routable as folder-sharing is not. Please check if invisible machines
are placed in the other subnets across the router. With WINS, message can be
sent by 'Type & Add'. If added to frequent list, machine name can be
shown also. You can install WINS in Linux or Windows NT/2000/2003 server.
Q: I can send messages. But why is not file
transfer working with the same
machines?
A : Message
is sent using using multiple NetBIOS protocols, e.g. NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, TCP/IP.
If one of those protocol is successful, message can be delivered
well. But file transfer depends on TCP/IP only. If TCP/IP connection is not
established between these machines, file transfer will not work. Try 'ping' or
check the result from command line 'ipconfig /all'.
Q: How can I suppress notifying message from print
server?
A : Windows NT/2000 or WFW print server sends notifying
message. If you don't care about the lost of message from this server, Ignore
option would be helpful (Option>Message Control>Ignore message from). If
you don't communicate with legacy applications, e.g. Microsoft WinPopUp, net
send, it is recommended to uncheck option 'View>Settings>Compatibility
with legacy applications'.
Q: Smart message, email address and message boxes aren't loaded.
What's wrong?
A
: Press CTRL-0(zero) to
check the path where data files are loaded.
If user data path is specified
in options, it has highest priority.
From version 3.43, default path is
application-data-path to support respective
users. If application-data-path exists, it has next
priority. For backward compatibility, old one is used if data files are
located in the old directory where executables are placed or which is
specified as start-in in lnk file.
Q : How can I send a message to the computer turned off
or unconnected to network?
A
: Bassline WinPopUp is a
server-client application which receives message without remote server. It is
the reason why it can respond to message so quickly. But at the same time, it
can't receive anything when shut down or unconnected to network. To overcome
this inherent shortcoming, 'Sending email' was added. Retransmission of
undelivered message via email would help you communicate even when the
recipient machines are unreachable.
Q : Can I predefine groups of users?
A
: Yes, you can make
predefined message just by adding recipients in "Define Smart Messages". They
can be invoked by specified hot-key or Smart Groups in Send Dialog. If you
check "Global" for hot-key, you can open Send Dialog with predefined message
without opening main dialog.
Q : How
does it work with Microsoft 'WinPopup' or 'net send', 'LinPopup' in
Linux?
- Version 3.97 or higher
- is fully compatible with these legacy applications
- supports sending to or receiving from user name(logon
name)
- Using version 3.43 classic,
- You can send to or receive from Microsoft
WinPopUp.
- Message formats are a little bit different.
- MS winpopup user name doesn't appear in User
List.
- Some special characters other than English may
not be supported.
- Unable to send to NT logon name or NetWare
Q : Why messaging is slow in my machine?
A :
If multiple protocols are installed(e.g. NetBEUI or IPX/SPX with TCP/IP),
delivery can be delayed by several seconds. Unless it
causes invisible user problem, it is highly recommended to use TCP/IP only. It
is the Microsoft policy and will enhance the speed performance.
Installation of WINS server will help TCP/IP only network and boost the
messaging speed. Please refer to MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/periodic/period00/NetBIOS.htm
Q : Is supported terminal service or Windows XP multiple user login?
A :
Windows XP supports multiple user logins (User
switching). But network communication resource can't be shared by multiple
instances of Bassline WinPopUp since its use should be limited to only one per
machine. Only first user is served.
How to Uninstall
Normally, files and registry are removed by Add/Remove in
Control pannel.
* Unless it is uninstalled automatically, please
follow these instructions.
Please remove all the files in popup
directory. (Usually, C:\Program Files\Bassline Software\Popup) - No file has
been copied into Windows or System directory.
Run "RegEdit.exe" and
remove following items for both HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run - "Bassline WinPopUp"
Software\Bassline Soft\Popup

following folders for each users
- New Version 4.xx or higher
User data files are
AddrBook.bsl (address book), SmartMsg.bsl (smart messages), RxMsgBox.bsl
(received messages) and TxMsgBox.bsl (transmitted messages).
Default
folder for these files is application-data-path.
- Classic version 3.43 or lower
User data files are
Email.adr (address book), Popup.usr (smart messages), RxMsg.box (received
messages) and TxMsg.box (transmitted messages).
Default folder for these
files are as follows;
For version 3.43: application-data-path
For version 3.42 or lower: Folder where executables are located,
C:\Program Files\Bassline Software\Popup
Application-data-path is determined by
operating system, usually as follows. Their attribute might be hidden.
- WinNT/2000/XP: c:\Documents and Settings\User
